Tantan (探探) : China's dating app where right-swipes match you with nearby singles for conversation.

Often described as China's answer to Tinder, Tantan is a location-based dating service run by Hello Group, the company behind Momo.

Profile cards are ranked by distance and gender preference; swipe right to like or left to pass, and a mutual like opens a chat.

Momo bought Tantan in 2018 for about USD 800 million. Use abroad is limited: the app runs in Chinese and usually needs a local phone number, though an international edition adds translation.

Does Tantan require real-name verification?

Tantan requires phone number verification but not mandatory real-name ID verification for basic use. However, Chinese regulations may require verified users for certain features. Photo verification (selfie matching) is available but optional, unlike some Chinese dating apps.

Is Tantan just a copy of Tinder?

Tantan's swipe mechanics are nearly identical to Tinder, but it includes China-specific features like "moments" (social feed), virtual gift sending, and WeChat integration. Free users get limited daily swipes. Premium (about $10/month) unlocks unlimited swipes and location change.

Can I use Tantan in the US to meet Chinese people?

Tantan works in the US without a VPN and has a significant user base of Chinese diaspora. The app offers English and Chinese language options. Registration accepts phone numbers from most countries. It functions similarly to Tinder with swipe-based matching.
